Fishing Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness or Wind River Range
« on: March 17, 2015, 04:29:51 PM »
Wife & I are deciding which wilderness area to pack into this year so I'm looking for some first hand knowledge from someone who has been there/done that.  We're going in mid to late August into September for about 10 - 14 days.  Appreciate any info you care to part with.

Thanks, Henry

I've packed the Southern Half Of the Winds.  North of Boulder Creek is considered Grizzly Habitat.

Most people access it from West side.  East side is Indian Reservation.

Lots of people backpack the CDT through the 80 mile stretch of the Winds that starts at Big Sandy in the South and ends at Green River Lakes in the North.

Big Sandy Lodge offers Horse Facilities and Cabins if you want to start and/or finish there.

Here is a good link to info on trailheads and near by towns.

Good reading on the Winds:

Wind River Trails Finis Mitchell
Hiking the Wind River Range

Feed stores in Pinedale
Sublette Co. Feed (my preference)
Crossfire Ranch Supply (new owners)
Jensens Feed (Newer)

Thanks for the info 2rocky.  Did you do any trout fishing?  If so, what was the quality of the trout fishing?  So North of Boulder Creek is less used, since it is known for Grizz?  We're kinda used to that after packing in the Bob several times.  Appreciate the info on feedstores  too, sometimes that's the hardest thing to find.

Henry, the Fish along the CDT have seen plenty of lures and flies.  If you can get off the beaten path, the brookies are pretty fun to catch.  Some of the lakes have Golden trout.  If you don't piss off the guys at the Great Outdoor shop, they might tell you which lakes and flies....
