How big of a tent?
« on: November 05, 2012, 04:27:16 AM »
going into the Bob next spring and then again in the fall, there will be 6 of us and maybe 7 going, my question is how big of a tent with a stove will it take to sleep all?  Will a 16x20 do it as long as we have another smaller tent for a cook tent?  How much will a tent that big wiegh?

I had a 16 x 20 and it would sleep six, if cots are used. Got pretty crowded with gear and such if bags were just layed out on a tarp. Depnds how friendly the people are.  I'd suggest two 12 x 14's. They pack easier. One big one is sure enough a load for a mule, worse if it gets wet. Poles are easier to find/cut .If you get them with doors on each end, they can be set up in tandem

a 16x20 is a big tent to pack in with.  It will weigh around 100 lbs.  If you set it up with a lodgepole frame the poles get pretty big and long as well and hard to handle.  It will go up easy with an internal frame but that will weigh another 150 lbs.

Two tents would be a lot easier to pack.  You don't want packs, much over 80 lbs. each.

The weight will vary greatly with material used.  Canvas is the heaviest.  Also very dark inside and will stain and mold the easiest.  However, will also stay warmer and cooler in summer.  There are a variety of fabrics used today.  All my tents are made out of "sunforger" cloth that is probably half the weight of canvas, lets in a lot more light, wont stain or mildew, wont burn, and is a lot cheaper.  I get my tents from Big Sky tent in Missoula, but Montana Cnavas in Belgrade makes some good tents and they also have some light weight options.   I think you could get by with a 16x20 and a 12x14 or 2 14x16's.
If you're lucky enough to be in the mountains, you're lucky enough!
