When I was a kid, I had only one bigger rifle...a 30/06.  It worked fairly well on coyotes if you used military ammo with a full metal jacket.  If you hit a bone it might tear a big hole though.

I tried a 243 for a while, handloading full metal jacket bullets.  It was kinda big though, and it too would tear a big hole if you hit a shoulder blade or something.

I finally ended up with a 22-250, Remington BDL, with a 24 inch barrel.  I don't think I really needed that long of a barrel, but boy does it shoot.  I've got a 3x9 Leupold on it now.  It will usually group close to 1/2 inch at 100 yards.  I glass bedded the action, floated the barrel, a adjusted the trigger.  I've been using hollow pt. Hornady match bullets.

If a coyote is coming straight in, I can shoot them in the chest and there is no exit wound, and minimal pelt damage.  With a shot from the side there is sometimes a big exit hole.  The second shot in my rifle is full metal jacket.  If I see a fox coming into my call I'll jack the first round (the hollow pt out) and use the other bullet for less pelt damage.

I might add that the hollow pts work super on prairie dogs also.

I have a Remington .204 with a bull barrel and a leupold scope on it.  My hunting buddy has set us up some hand loads after talking with the Sierra folks in Sedalia, MO and with a 60 grain hollow point that has the plastic insert that makes it feed reliably and shoot more reliably, we are hitting 1 inch groups at 300 yards with a bench rest.  It gets my vote but then I haven't used a 22-250.

Sorry about the 60 grain bullet, I was wrong, it is a 40 grain bullet.  That really sizzles in the handloads.

Guess I am in the minority here, I like my trusty old .223 with a 55 grain soft lead point, does the job REAL nice, if you can shoot!!

Badger,
I think the next varmit gun I get will be a 223.  It's would be a great gun for everything from prairie dogs to coyotes.  I do love my 22-250 though....

Years ago I was working a ranch up by White Swan Wa, I had a .22 Hornet that really knocked them on their butts. But I have lately used nothing but a .22 Mag. I havn't seen one that can't be knocked down with one.

I usually take my Colt M4 and my Mossberg 590 with me at the same time. different scenarios could make you change guns in a hurry! Sometimes I might use my Ruger P-90 if the timing is right or if my mood is off I might take my 1918A3 BAR. I might try a new reload in my new Marlin 450.
Fun thing about Coyote hunting is that you can use any gun you want any time of the year at least in my part of the country.
