![]() DAY 15 - Monday, June 16 Map and compass course. Started with a video (powered by a generator) then worked through a 7-page worksheet on using a compass and reading topo maps. After shooting some bearings and doing triangulations around camp, we drove to a mountain several miles from camp and shot bearings toward some wallows that, according to the map, were 3 miles away. We must have learned well. We hit them dead-on. After that we split up and "hunted" our way back to the trucks. Most of us got into a herd of 40 elk, mostly cows and calves. A couple of the other students saw two. Lots of game around here! While not shooting or marking bearings, Cody had us practice picking out trees, rocks or other objects and estimating the ranges in terms of rifle ballistics then pacing the distance to see if we were accurate. Distances can be deceptive in the western mountains, and judging distance accurately is crucial for a guide.
